CAN Maroc 2025 : gros coup dur pour la Côte d’Ivoire avant l’entrée en lice
Just hours before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, bad news is piling up for some national teams. After Algeria, forced to do without their midfielder Houssem Aouar, who withdrew due to injury and was replaced by Himad Abdelli, it is now Ivory Coast that has suffered a serious setback.
This Wednesday afternoon, the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) officially announced that Sébastien Haller will miss the Africa Cup of Nations. The Elephants' star striker, who won the tournament in 2023, was injured on Sunday, December 14, 2025, during a match with FC Utrecht, making his participation in the continental competition impossible.
In a statement, the FIF specified that Sébastien Haller, called up by coach Émerse Faé for the 2025 AFCON, is forced to withdraw for medical reasons.
He is replaced by Evann Guessand, an Aston Villa player, who was initially on the reserve list. The Ivorian football governing body also sent its best wishes for a speedy recovery to its striker and reiterated its full support.
This absence is a real blow for Ivory Coast, as Haller is a key element of their attack, both for his experience and his impact on the game. The Elephants will therefore have to adapt quickly to this new situation.
