CAN Maroc 2025 : les papys font de la résistance

As in previous editions, the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Morocco, is marked by the emergence of young talents such as Ibrahim Mbaye, Yan Diomandé, and James Bogere. But alongside this ambitious youth, the veterans are showing that they still have plenty to offer and can continue to shine on the continental stage.

The oldest player in this AFCON, 42-year-old Elias Gaspar Pelembe, known as Dominguez, distinguished himself against Gabon by winning a penalty, giving Mozambique a decisive lead. While he may no longer have the legs of his 20s, the Mozambican veteran compensates with his game intelligence and experience.

Zimbabwe's squad, which includes the youngest player in the tournament, Tadiwa Chakuchichi, also features an example of longevity in Washington Arubi. At 40, the goalkeeper remains the undisputed starter for the Warriors. His Ugandan counterpart, Denis Onyango (40), has also demonstrated that he remains a key player for his team. Absent for the defeat against Tunisia (3-1), he returned to the starting lineup for the draw against Tanzania (1-1).

Another veteran who remains indispensable is Mohamed El Shenawy. At 37, the Egyptian goalkeeper retains his status as number one. Despite Gabon's elimination, Bruno Ecuele Manga (37) also held his own in central defense for the Panthers.

For the Lions of Teranga, Idrissa Gana Gueye (36 years old) has shown that, despite his age, he remains a key player in Papé Thiaw's system. Still in contention for a place in the round of 16, Angola also relies on the experience of its goalkeeper Henriques Marques (39 years old) and its captain Fredy Ribeiro (35 years old).

Captain and playmaker Youssef M'Changama (35 years old) remains the technical leader of the Comoros. Top scorer of the previous edition in Ivory Coast with six goals, Emilio Nsue may have lost his starting place with Nzalang Nacional, but he is present in Morocco, wearing the number 10 jersey, ready to seize his opportunity.

Through their longevity, experience and exemplary conduct, these "grandpas" are offering a magnificent lesson to the younger generation.

Le terme "Papys" au niveau du titre devrait être mis entre guillemets comme dans le texte !
