During the U17 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final played Thursday evening in Rabat, the Senegalese national anthem was booed by some Moroccan supporters before kickoff. This regrettable incident occurred during the match, which the Young Lions won on penalties (1-1, 6-5 on penalties).
This scene risks fueling tensions between supporters of the two countries, at a time when sporting relations between Senegal and Morocco have recently been marked by a strong rivalry.
In the event of booing or behavior deemed disrespectful towards a country's anthem during an official competition, CAF or FIFA may open disciplinary proceedings.
According to the disciplinary regulations in force, several sanctions may be considered: warning, reprimand, financial fine, partial or total closure, stadium ban, or even point deduction in the most serious cases or in the event of a repeat offence.
African football authorities could therefore take up the case in order to assess the events that occurred before this U17 AFCON semi-final.
Meanwhile, Senegal will face Tanzania in the final to try and reconquer Africa after their victory in 2023 in the same category.
