Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off on Tuesday during the third group stage match against Benin (a 3-0 victory). What is certain at the moment is that the Lions' captain will be suspended for the round of 16 match (Saturday at 4 p.m.) against Sudan. But will he be back for the quarter-finals if Senegal qualifies?
Regarding the AFCON regulations, the CAF remains ambiguous concerning player red cards. Paragraph 3 of Article 42, which addresses red cards, stipulates an automatic one-match suspension. However, the article allows the CAF Disciplinary Committee to add a further sanction. "Any player sent off by the referee is automatically suspended for the following match in the same competition, without prejudice to any other sanctions that may be imposed subsequently," it reads.
Normally, Koulibaly should receive a one-match suspension, unless the CAF decides otherwise.
It should be noted that, according to paragraph 4 of the same article, any player who receives two red cards during the same tournament will be suspended for the remainder of the competition. Therefore, if Kalidou Koulibaly receives another red card upon his return (if Senegal qualifies), the Al-Hilal defender will not play again in the tournament.
