Conférence de Fiorentino Pérez : la presse espagnole contre-attaque

The atmosphere at Real Madrid has become unbearable. Already weakened by a difficult season both on and off the pitch, the Madrid club is now going through a new period of turbulence following the shocking press conference of its president, Florentino Pérez. Expected to address the club's sporting difficulties, the future of the Madrid project, and the internal tensions that have emerged in recent weeks, the Spanish executive ultimately delivered a nearly two-hour speech marked by repeated attacks against the media, his opponents, and some club members.

From the outset of his speech, Florentino Pérez was keen to dismiss any idea of leaving despite the current crisis. With an ironic and provocative tone, he asserted that he had absolutely no intention of stepping down as president of Real Madrid. The Madrid boss then announced new presidential elections, before openly challenging his opponents by asking them to run against him. In a particularly tense atmosphere, he assured everyone that he would remain at the helm of the club as long as the members continued to place their trust in him.

Throughout his speech, Florentino Pérez made a series of controversial statements. The Real Madrid president denounced what he considers a media campaign designed to weaken the club. He directly attacked several Spanish media outlets and journalists, whom he accused of seeking to harm the Merengue club on a daily basis. The newspaper ABC, the Vocento group, and several media figures such as Juanma Castaño, Santi Segurola, and Relevo were targeted by his criticism.

In another exchange that sparked strong reactions in Spain, Florentino Pérez made light of rumors concerning his health, specifically mentioning reports of a supposed terminal cancer. This remark only added to the unease surrounding a press conference deemed completely out of control by much of the Spanish media.

The press reaction was swift. Even newspapers usually close to Real Madrid expressed their astonishment at the virulence of the Madrid president. The daily AS, in particular, emphasized the climate of constant confrontation established by Florentino Pérez, also pointing out that the club members (socios) have not had a genuine presidential choice since 2006. The publication also highlighted the substantial financial guarantees required to run for the club presidency, a system often criticized in Spain.

For its part, MARCA described Florentino Pérez as particularly nervous and overwhelmed by events. The Madrid-based newspaper revisited his numerous personal attacks against some journalists present in the room, as well as several statements deemed contemptuous. Certain remarks, particularly those targeting a female journalist, caused considerable unease in the Spanish media.

In Catalonia, SPORT was no kinder to the Real Madrid president. The newspaper called the press conference "grotesque," denouncing Florentino Pérez's perceived arrogant and provocative attitude. The media outlet particularly criticized the Madrid leader for failing to address the club's real sporting problems, preferring to settle scores with his detractors rather than provide answers about the team's future.

Several prominent figures in the Spanish media landscape also criticized this statement. On COPE radio, journalist Manolo Lama called the press conference "pathetic," arguing that it shed light on Real Madrid's current situation. This statement perfectly encapsulates the prevailing sentiment in Spain after this episode, already considered one of the most significant of Florentino Pérez's tenure.
