Coupe du monde 2026 : pour Philippe Diallo, « il n’est aucunement question » que la France boycotte la compétition en opposition à Trump

While Germany has opened the debate on boycotting the 2026 World Cup in response to Donald Trump's threats against Greenland, the president of the FFF believes that the French team will not follow that path.

For Philippe Diallo, the question does not arise. While the debate around a possible boycott of the 2026 football World Cup is gradually emerging in several countries, including Germany, due to the international policy pursued by Donald Trump, the president of the French Football Federation (FFF) has clarified his position.

Speaking on RMC Sport, the 62-year-old executive contradicted the German position this Sunday. "I have a principled position which is to try to ensure that sport - a place of gathering and unity - remains as far removed as possible from politics," he said.

“I am closely monitoring the international situation, but at this stage, there is absolutely no question of a boycott of the French national team from the World Cup.” For Philippe Diallo, the position of French football “is clear,” even though he remains attentive “to any developments that may occur.” “My deepest wish is that the French team will leave for the United States on June 9th with great ambition for this World Cup,” the FFF president reiterated.

In Germany, "the time has come" to open the debate

As a reminder, Oke Göttlich, the vice-president of the German Football Association (DFB), asked on Saturday, "When will the time come to reflect on and seriously discuss this issue?" "For me," he said, "that time has come. What were the justifications for the Olympic boycotts of the 1980s? In my opinion, the potential threat is greater today than it was then. We need to have this discussion."

In Germany, a public debate has been underway for several days on how to respond to the tensions arising from the American desire to seize Greenland and the aggressive policy pursued by Donald Trump towards the European continent, such as the threats of increased customs duties issued by Washington against the states of the Old Continent opposing it.

On the French side, Claude Le Roy, a former French coach who spent most of his career on the bench of African national teams, questioned the need "to call for a boycott of the 2026 World Cup, given Donald Trump's behavior towards the continent, with a FIFA president who boasts of being on his side."
