[En route pour la Can] Présentation-CAN 2025 : Mali, Algérie, RD Congo, Tunisie, Afrique du Sud, Angola et Burkina Faso, des outsiders dangereux
The Africa Cup of Nations remains a particularly difficult competition to predict. While several teams are clearly among the favorites, other nations present themselves as very dangerous outsiders that must be taken seriously. Among them are Mali, DR Congo, Tunisia, South Africa, Algeria, Angola, and Burkina Faso.
Mali: Doing better than the previous edition
Quarter-finalists in the last edition, Mali nearly eliminated the host nation, Ivory Coast, who ultimately lifted the trophy. Boasting a talented young generation, Mali plays attractive football, but still struggles to convert its numerous chances. If the Eagles can address these shortcomings, they can compete with several of Africa's elite teams.
DR Congo: In search of a third title
Since their titles in 1968 and 1974, the Democratic Republic of Congo has struggled to return to the top of African football. However, in recent years, the momentum has become decidedly positive. Semi-finalists in the last edition and still in contention for qualification for the 2026 World Cup, the Leopards possess the experience and talent necessary to shine in Morocco.
Tunisia: A rising generation
Tunisia, a regular fixture at continental tournaments, has struggled to repeat its victory since its triumph on home soil in 2004. However, propelled by a talented new generation and having qualified for the 2026 World Cup, it remains a formidable team, capable of defeating any nation. In Morocco, the Carthage Eagles will be an opponent to be taken very seriously.
South Africa: A true challenger
Third at the last Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa had an excellent run in Ivory Coast. Boasting a cohesive squad comprised of 90% players from the domestic league, and having qualified for the 2026 World Cup, the team arrives in Morocco with high ambitions. Winners of the title in 1996, Bafana Bafana dream of returning to the top of the continent.
Algeria: Avoiding the misadventure of the last two editions
Winners of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria then endured two very disappointing tournaments, in Cameroon and then Ivory Coast. But recently, the Fennecs have undergone a major overhaul, with the arrival of a new coach and the emergence of a promising generation, alongside experienced veterans. Having qualified for the 2026 World Cup, Algeria will be looking to cause an upset in Morocco.
Angola: A difficult outsider to outmaneuver
Quarter-finalists at the last Africa Cup of Nations, Angola put on a strong display in Ivory Coast. Even though the team appears to be fielding an aging generation, they remain a formidable opponent. With attacking weapons like Mabululu and Dala, the Palancas Negras are capable of defeating any nation. Drawn in Group B with two World Cup participants, Egypt and South Africa, they face a significant challenge.
Burkina Faso: An outsider to watch
A finalist in 2013 and a regular in the semi-finals, Burkina Faso will once again be an outsider to watch in this 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. Despite being eliminated from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after finishing second behind Egypt, the Stallions will be eager to redeem themselves in Morocco and challenge the continent's powerhouses.
