More than three years after announcing his international retirement, Hugo Lloris could make a return to the French national team. This possibility was far from being considered.

For Didier Deschamps' last major tournament as manager of Les Bleus, some imagined a comeback from Antoine Griezmann or Olivier Giroud. But Lloris' name was almost never mentioned.

At 39, the French goalkeeper continues to perform well with Los Angeles FC, with whom he recently extended his contract until 2026, with an option for an additional year.

As a reminder, the former captain of Les Bleus officially announced his international retirement on January 10, 2023, shortly after the World Cup in Qatar.

With 145 caps, he remains the most capped player in the history of the French national team, with a record marked in particular by the 2018 World Cup victory and the 2021 Nations League victory.

At the time, Lloris explained that he wanted to pass the torch, believing that the next generation was ready, particularly with Mike Maignan. But according to information from L'Équipe, the goalkeeper wouldn't rule out a return if the national team coach decided to call him up.

Those close to the player emphasize his discretion: he has no intention of forcing a return or disrupting the current hierarchy. Lloris would be ready to step up, even as third-choice goalkeeper, to support the next generation.

A possible return would therefore not call into question Mike Maignan's number 1 status.

On the other hand, this situation could further complicate the position of Lucas Chevalier, who is already losing ground in the hierarchy.

It remains to be seen whether Didier Deschamps will choose to recall the man who was his captain for over a decade. A decision that, if confirmed, would mark an unexpected turning point for the end of his tenure as head of the French national team.

France, the world runners-up, will start the 2026 World Cup against Senegal on June 16.
