Gabon : après la défaite de trop, l’État suspend l’équipe nationale de football
After several days of warning signs from the Gabonese Presidential Palace, action was taken. On the night of January 1st, the day after another defeat for the Gabonese Panthers against Ivory Coast (3-2), the authorities announced a series of radical measures marking a clear break with the current management of the national team.
Already, during the last Council of Ministers meeting, the Head of State had expressed his deep dissatisfaction, denouncing in particular "the lack of method," the "dispersion of resources," and the "erosion of patriotic spirit" within the team. These criticisms were officially echoed a few hours later.
In a statement read live on Gabon Television by the acting Minister of Sports, Dr. Simplice Désiré Mamboula, the government announced the dissolution of the technical staff, the suspension of the national team until further notice, as well as the exclusion of two emblematic players: Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The text describes Gabon's performance in preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as "dishonorable," deeming it "the antithesis of the ethical and exemplary values championed by the Fifth Republic." This strong decision opens a period of uncertainty for the immediate future of Gabonese football, but the authorities present it as a necessary wake-up call for rebuilding.
