Residents are allowed to stop work at noon this Monday (3 p.m. French time) to watch the historic match that could qualify them for their first-ever World Cup.
If they qualify, Cape Verde would be the third newcomer to the competition after Jordan and Uzbekistan. The country, with a population of around 525,000, would become the second-smallest team in history to participate in a World Cup, behind Iceland in Russia in 2018, and the smallest team from its territory in history, surpassing Trinidad and Tobago at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

During this qualifying campaign, Cape Verde has suffered only one defeat, against Cameroon (4-1), for six wins and two draws, including the last frustrating against Libya (3-3) on October 8. Pedro Brito's players could have sealed their direct qualification last Wednesday, but an unjustified offside whistled in the final moments deprived them of victory (3-3).
