The first Madrid derby of the season between Atlético and Real Madrid lived up to all expectations. The Colchoneros inflicted a humiliating 5-2 defeat on their arch-rivals from the Spanish capital. Led by a fiery Julián Álvarez, they provided a real lesson in realism.
However, after Le Normand's opening goal (14th), Real Madrid managed to turn the situation around thanks to Mbappé (25th) and Arda Güler (36th). But in a great evening, Atlético equalized in the final seconds of the first half through Sorloth (45+3).
In the second half, Julián Álvarez caused the Merengues a lot of damage by converting a penalty (51st minute), before scoring twice with a sumptuous free kick (63rd minute). In the final moments of the derby, Antoine Griezmann came to put the nail in the coffin by scoring the fifth goal.
A big victory for Atlético, who had not beaten their rivals by a five-goal margin since 1950.
