On November 5th, RTS published a profile of Minister Abdourahmane Diouf. This publication sparked controversy on social media. Many internet users, apparently members of the Pastef party, denounced the publication. They particularly criticized RTS for its timing. "Why publish a profile at this time?" "What is the real purpose of this profile? And why now?" Yet the answer is obvious.
The profile is largely justified by the fact that Dr. Abdourahmane Diouf is currently in the news. Due to his recent public statements, followed by strong reactions from ministers, directors-general, members of parliament, and other Pastef party officials, the head of Awale finds himself at the center of attention. It is no coincidence that Sonko promised yesterday during the tele-meeting to remove him from the government. The profile is therefore entirely justified.
It's worth remembering that in journalism, profiles are very often justified by current events, or even by new discoveries, the latter being reserved for the anonymous. In the current context in Senegal, a profile of Abdourahmane Diouf is just as justified as those of Madiambal Diagne, Pape Malick Ndour, and even Ousmane Sonko, provided, in the latter's case, that he can find something original to tell his audience. The key, therefore, is to add to what the public already knew or, at the very least, to refresh their memory.
The aim of a profile is neither to create a hagiography nor to put the chosen individual on trial. It must therefore be balanced and perfectly situated within its context. And this is precisely where the RTS profile falls short. The journalist maintained a complete silence regarding the context in which the piece was produced. Not a word about the controversy between the subject and Pastef. Under these circumstances, it becomes legitimate to question the objective, especially since the profile remains, moreover, laudatory.
Abdourahmane Diouf is presented in the best possible light. No questions are raised about his legitimacy in Pastef's victory, let alone the political weight of his party. RTS conveniently omits his recent past with Sonko. All these factors, however, help explain the barrage of criticism he receives from Pastef, led by ministers who have no regard for government solidarity.
It is this oversight that has fueled the claims of Pastef activists, who are crying conspiracy. "It's no coincidence that he's receiving so much publicity in the current context," commented one internet user. "Has RTS become a propaganda channel for detractors and opponents?" wondered another. And most commentators are pointing the finger at the Director General of RTS, Pape Ale Niang. The period after November 8th will undoubtedly bring more answers.

On fonce vers l'irréparable. Qui va nous sauver ?
