Management sportif : L’appel de Mouhamed Ndao Tyson à une révolution encadrée
The first class of sports agents certified by the State of Senegal marks a major turning point in the structuring and professionalization of national sport.
To sponsor this pioneering cohort, the choice fell on Mouhamed Ndao, known as Tyson, a legend of Senegalese wrestling, whose career embodies both the revolution, sporting success and the lessons learned from a career conducted without real professional guidance.
At the graduation ceremony on Monday, the man who theorized the business of sport in wrestling delivered a powerful testimony on the importance of strategic counseling in managing athletes' careers. He reflected on an opportunity that eluded him during his glory years.
“I could have been a shareholder in Sonatel-Orange if I had had good advice, a knowledgeable agent. In 1998, when France Télécom became a shareholder in Sonatel, I had to advertise for them. They offered to pay me in shares. I replied: ‘Give me my money, you’re talking to me about shares.’ It’s in these kinds of situations that you’re needed. It’s important to make money, but you have to know how to invest it,” he advises.
The former leader of the Boul Falé generation indicates that this promotion represents much more than institutional recognition. According to him, "it's the culmination of a dream."
Tyson stressed the need to provide Senegalese athletes with professional support that matches their talent.
“Striking wrestling only exists in Senegal. It’s like sumo in Japan. Apart from two giants facing off, sumo has nothing spectacular about it, and yet it is sold all over the world. Why? Because real managers have invested in selling this discipline,” he explained.
To support this evolution, the class's sponsor emphasized the urgent need for a solid academic foundation, an essential condition for the sustainable development of the sport. Drawing on the American model, he reminded everyone that talent alone is not enough. "There are people more gifted than LeBron James or Kobe Bryant who never made it to the NBA because they didn't go to school. Understanding communication, image, and marketing is crucial."
Mouhamed Ndao Tyson pointed out that the modern sports agent is a key professional, responsible for representing, protecting and managing the interests of the professional athlete.
