The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) will distribute a total of $727 million (€620 million) among the 48 teams competing in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, it announced on Wednesday.
"The FIFA Council, meeting on the sidelines of the Paris SG-Flamengo Intercontinental Final in Doha (Qatar), "approved a record financial contribution of $727 million," FIFA announced in a statement.
She mentions a 50% increase compared to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which corresponds to the 50% increase in participating teams, from 32 to 48.
While each of them will receive $1.5 million "to cover her preparation costs", the bulk of the sum allocated by FIFA, namely $655 million, is devoted to bonuses.
The winner will pocket $50 million, the runner-up $33 million, and so on in descending order down to the $9 million paid to the 12 teams eliminated in the first round.
In 2022, for the World Cup in Qatar, Argentina, the winners, received $42 million and France, the runners-up, $30 million. The 16 teams eliminated in the first round each received $9 million.
