Mondial 2026 : la France choisit un sparring-partner africain pour se préparer au choc face au Sénégal
The French national team, considered the overwhelming favorites for the 2026 World Cup, is fine-tuning its preparations for its opening match in the competition, where it will notably face Senegal. To prepare for this encounter against the Lions of Teranga, Les Bleus have scheduled two friendly matches at the beginning of June.
The first match is scheduled for June 4th in Nantes against an African selection that recently participated in the Africa Cup of Nations. The announcement was made this Thursday, January 15th, by the president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, following a meeting of the executive committee. Without revealing the identity of the opponent, the president confirmed the desire to face a team with a profile similar to that of Senegal, which, according to several sources close to the French Football Federation, could be Ivory Coast.
Four days later, on June 8, France will face a European team. The choice of opponent will depend on the results of the continental playoffs scheduled for March. The venue for this match has not yet been finalized, but the French Football Federation (FFF) is considering a stadium north of Paris to facilitate logistics, as Les Bleus are scheduled to fly to the United States on the afternoon of June 9 from their training center in Clairefontaine.
During the World Cup group stage, France, the top seed in Group I, will begin their campaign on the American East Coast. Didier Deschamps' men will face Senegal on June 16 in the suburbs of New York, before taking on a playoff winner from the trio of Iraq, Bolivia, and Suriname on June 22 in Philadelphia. They will conclude this first phase on June 26 in Boston against Norway.
National team coach Didier Deschamps will announce his World Cup squad in mid-May. These friendly matches will therefore be the final real-world tests to assess the team's fitness before the major global football tournament.
