Bayern Munich goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer, who retired from international football after Euro 2024, is expected to return to the German national team for the World Cup this summer (June 11-July 19), according to German media on Tuesday.

According to information from the German daily Bild, Germany's coach Julian Nagelsmann called Oliver Baumann, who held the position until now, to inform him of his decision to call up Manuel Neuer and make him the Mannschaft's No. 1 goalkeeper for the World Cup in North America (Canada, United States, Mexico).

The German Football Association (DFB) did not confirm the information to SID, a German sports news agency and subsidiary of AFP, referring to the announcement of the selection on Thursday in the early afternoon.

On Saturday, Sky television in Germany announced that Manuel Neuer would be among the 23 to 26 players selected to compete in the World Cup. Invited that evening to the Sportstudio program on German public television ZDF, Nagelsmann declined to comment.

Rumors of Neuer's return gained momentum last week, with the German bi-weekly kicker reporting that Neuer was on an extended list of 55 names sent to FIFA, from which Nagelsmann must draw his list of 23 to 26 players, as well as any last-minute call-ups after an injury.

Manuel Neuer, who extended his contract with Bayern Munich for another season until the summer of 2027, played his 124th and final match with the German national team in the Euro 2024 quarter-final in Stuttgart, which they lost to Spain (2-1, after extra time).

Marc-André ter Stegen, who was supposed to succeed him, suffered a series of injuries and it was Oliver Baumann who took over as number 1 during the 2024/25 Nations League, and then in World Cup qualifying.

At 40, Manuel Neuer remains Bayern's No. 1 goalkeeper, where he has recently delivered numerous outstanding performances, notably in the Champions League in Madrid (first leg quarter-final) and against Paris SG (second leg semi-final).
