Pape Thiaw : «L’objectif des phases de groupe est atteint. Le seul point noir… »
Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw, was generally satisfied after his players' resounding victory against Benin (3-0), which secured them first place in Group D at the end of the group stage of the 2025 AFCON. In a press conference, the Senegalese coach praised the collective performance of the Lions.
“We wanted to finish top of the group and we achieved that,” Pape Thiaw began, clearly delighted with the outcome of this third matchday. For him, this game primarily allowed his team to confirm its strength. “We showed that we are a good team,” he insisted, highlighting the control and focus displayed by his players throughout the match.
The only negative point of the evening was Kalidou Koulibaly's sending-off in the 71st minute. The coach downplayed the incident, preferring to emphasize the Senegalese captain's attitude. "Koulibaly's red card is the only downside, but he's someone who always sacrifices himself for the team," he explained.
Pape Thiaw also justified his choices and the changes made during the match, highlighting the depth of his squad. "I made changes, but as I often say, I have 28 starters. There is healthy competition within the group," he stated, before congratulating all of his players.
Finally, the coach did not hide the fact that he had been closely following the league standings. "I was also following Congo's results," he confided in a press conference.
