Will we see Lionel Messi in North America to compete in his sixth career World Cup? The former FC Barcelona striker has not yet decided whether he will participate in the 2026 edition. At 38, the Argentine icon, crowned with the 2022 World Cup, prefers to wait before deciding whether he will wear the Albiceleste jersey again to defend the title.
In an interview with the American channel NBC, the current Inter Miami player acknowledged that playing in a final World Cup would be a dream, while remaining clear about the physical demands that it entails.
"To be honest, it would be amazing to play in the World Cup. I would like to be fit and play an important role to help my national team, if I am there," Messi said.
Argentina's legendary captain plans to take stock when preseason resumes with his American club.
"When preseason begins with Inter Miami next year, I'll evaluate my condition day by day. I'll see if I can be 100%, if I can be useful to the national team. Then I'll make my decision," he added.
Already qualified for the competition, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Argentina could therefore count on—or not—its greatest architect of the 2022 title. Fans will have to wait until the end of the year to find out if the Pulga will attempt one last world dance in the Albiceleste jersey.
