Phase de groupe CAN 2025 : Les tops et les flops de l'équipe du Sénégal
Senegal finished the group stage with a 3-0 victory over Benin, securing 7 points out of a possible 9. Pape Thiaw's men finished top of their group, ahead of DR Congo. During this first round, some unexpected players stepped up, while others, considered starters, practically lost their places. Here are the highs and lows of this first round.
The best
Ibrahim Mbaye
The 17-year-old arrived in the national team with no inhibitions. Despite his youth, he has already shaken up the established order. Coming on as a substitute in all three matches, he has been decisive each time. Winning the penalty for the third goal against Benin and setting up the equalizer against DR Congo, Mbaye has become a valuable substitute and one of the weapons in Senegal's attack. It wouldn't be surprising to see him start in the knockout matches.
Idrissa Gana Guèye
36 years old and still at the top! With the plethora of top-level midfielders in the Senegalese squad, few would have bet that it would be this "veteran" who would outshine everyone during this first round of the AFCON. Gana Gueye constantly wins back possession and perfectly links the different lines of the team. He performs his balancing role with great intelligence, knowing when to support attacks and when to wait for the team to neutralize opposing counter-attacks.
Krépin Diatta
It's almost as if his impressive performances have become the norm. Almost anonymously, Krépin Diatta firmly holds his position on the right flank. Even if he offers little going forward, he is impenetrable in defense. In three matches, no one has managed to breach the Senegalese right flank.
The flops
Ismaila Sarr
If there's a loser for Senegal in this first round, it's him. His season with Crystal Palace was seen as a turning point, a chance to finally unlock his full potential with the national team, but Sarr is still struggling. Lacking dynamism, lacking impact, making little difference on his flank... the winger has been missing many things to hope to remain in the starting eleven. Heavily criticized after the draw against DR Congo, he was dropped from the starting lineup by Pape Thiaw for the third match. He didn't even get on the pitch against Benin.
Pape Matar Sarr
We only saw him once in three matches, but that was enough to put him in the flops. Starting against Benin on Tuesday, expectations were high for Pape Matar Sarr. In the end, virtually nothing! No influence on the game and struggled with positioning. Simply put: invisible. He also lost possession eight times. Against Benin, he missed a golden opportunity to make it harder for Pape Thiaw to choose his midfield for the upcoming matches.
Iliman Ndiaye
Plenty of good intentions, little success. The Everton player failed to make an impact on Senegal's play against DR Congo and Benin. Caught in the Congolese vice during the second matchday, he found no way to make his mark. Repositioned on the right against Benin, he tried hard, but to no avail. His only good match was against Botswana. Insufficient for a player of his caliber.

flop diomaye
