Rennes coach Habib Beye admitted on Tuesday that he almost lost his job after Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Nice, but insisted that he did not see the trip to Toulouse on Wednesday (matchday 10 of Ligue 1) as an "ultimatum".
"We're not going to play a fool's game. You've all read the news (in the press). It had to stop, it continues and it continues for a very specific reason, which is that the management feels that I have the energy and the ability to make this team win," Beye said at a press conference on Wednesday.
On Monday, a specialist website claimed that it was "over between Stade Rennais and Habib Beye," a report quickly denied to AFP by a source close to the case and by other media outlets.
Tenth with 11 points, Rennes has four draws and one defeat and is inexorably moving away from the European places, the objective it has set itself.
However, Habib Beye refuses to say that any result other than a victory in Toulouse would seal his fate.
He assured that he still had the "unconditional support" of the owners - the Pinault family - and his players, despite the sporting emergency.
"In the situation we're in, yes, we have to win. But is it an ultimatum? In the profession we're in today, an ultimatum... I don't see it like that," he replied.
He prefers to see it as "a great challenge."
"We have to find solutions today so that the team is in the best possible shape tomorrow, given all the turmoil surrounding the club's situation and mine," he said.
He intends to prepare for the match against Toulouse "like anyone else".
"The only thing I'm going to say (to my players) is, above all, don't be on a mission for anyone other than yourself," he concluded.
