Dr Ibrahima Sy, ministre de la Santé : « La lutte contre les maladies non transmissibles reste une priorité»
"True to its tradition of leadership in public health, Senegal continues to strengthen the resilience of its health system," said Health Minister Dr. Ibrahima Sy in his welcoming remarks at the West African College of Physicians (COAM) Congress and the 2025 General Scientific and Medical Assembly (AGSM), held in Dakar.
The minister reiterated the country's ongoing efforts to ensure equitable and preventative healthcare, citing in particular the free breast cancer screenings offered during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October). He emphasized that this initiative demonstrates the government's commitment to promoting prevention and universal access to healthcare.
"The fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), often associated with serious complications, remains a priority, supported by surveys like the STEP study," he says.
Thanks to its sustained efforts, Senegal has significantly strengthened its epidemiological surveillance capacity, its health diplomacy, and its production of expertise adapted to African realities. These advances position the country as "a leading regional player, committed to the integration of health services and sub-regional cooperation."
Minister Dr. Ibrahima Sy also highlighted the strategic role of innovation and digital technology in healthcare. According to him, these tools represent a major lever for reducing medical deserts, improving the traceability of care, and bringing services closer to the population.
However, he stressed the need to maintain an "inclusive, ethical approach focused on the real needs of communities".
