Since the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN-2025) final, the affair of goalkeeper Édouard Mendy's towels has sparked controversy. The Senegalese goalkeeper had his towels repeatedly stolen by stewards and Moroccan players. This Monday, the chairman of the referees' committee of the Confederation of African Football addressed the issue. His words are, to say the least, surprising.
"This is a problem that the organizer must take into consideration for future competitions. A towel is not equipment for a player or a goalkeeper. When a goalkeeper carries a towel, it must be done in a very sporting manner with more fair play. As soon as it starts to create or influence the game, I think that towel should be kept away from the playing area," said Olivier Safari on Canal+.
He also addressed another topic that has been making headlines: "When a team leaves the field, there is a set amount of regulation time. The referee will wait for the regulation time to expire. This is from the point of view of the laws of the game and as far as administration is concerned. There are also disciplinary sanctions that the organizer can take. All of this now depends on the competition rules or other regulations that accompany this competition," he said.
