The "Joola" tragedy should call for a profound change in behavior, according to the Minister of the Armed Forces, Birame Diop, who spoke in Ziguinchor, on the 23rd anniversary of the sinking of the ferry off the Gambian coast, on the night of September 26, 2022.

"Remembering is not just about looking back at the past, it is also about drawing lessons for the present and the future, with lucidity and without complacency. This is one of the best ways to honor the memory of our fallen," said the Minister of the Armed Forces. He also welcomed the choice of this year's theme: "23 years after 'le Joola', the urgency of remembrance, the imperative of a change in behavior."

This maritime disaster is not just a tragic chapter in our history. It must be a catalyst for a profound and lasting transformation of our individual and collective behavior, according to the minister. "The Joola" reminds us of an essential truth, namely our responsibility in tragedies, tragedies that, unfortunately, too often bring grief to our society, whether on our roads, at sea, or in our communities," calling for a complete retrospection.

To the families of the victims and survivors, the Minister of the Armed Forces reassured them of the government's commitment to supporting them. "I would like to take this opportunity to pay them a heartfelt tribute for their tireless commitment to remembering the disaster and their constant advocacy for the satisfaction of the grievances of the victims and their families. I would also like to assure them that active listening and consultation with them in all areas, particularly social support and memorial policy, will remain constant priorities of the government," he assured.

At the beginning of his speech, Birame Diop delivered to the families of the victims and survivors the message of the Head of State and the Head of Government, and reaffirmed "the compassion and solidarity of the entire nation and the unfailing commitment of the State to the families of the victims and survivors."
