Police nationale : le gouvernement renforce le budget, les équipements et les effectifs
In an economic context marked by delicate budgetary choices, the Senegalese government is strengthening the resources of the National Police. With increased funding, improved working conditions, technological modernization, and preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the government is demonstrating its commitment to consolidating public safety.
The National Police will benefit from a significant increase in its resources in 2026. The budget allocated to the institution will amount to 150.87 billion FCFA, compared to 127.52 billion in 2025, representing an increase of 18.31%, announced Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko this Tuesday at the headquarters of the National Police.
According to the head of government, this budget increase aims to accelerate the completion of several security infrastructures, to strengthen the acquisition of logistical equipment and protective materials, but also to support the implementation of the National Safety and Security Program.
This budget increase is also part of the security preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, a major international event for which Senegal intends to deploy a security system that meets international standards. Public security now represents nearly 59% of the Ministry of the Interior's overall budget, reflecting the priority given by the State to the protection of people and property.
Beyond investments in equipment, the government intends to improve the working conditions of the police forces.
Recalling a recent night patrol he conducted in Dakar, Ousmane Sonko paid tribute to the officers for the arduous and complex nature of their daily mission. He reaffirmed the State's commitment to strengthening the human and material resources of the National Police, particularly through the modernization of infrastructure, the provision of appropriate protective equipment, and improved support for volunteer auxiliary police officers.
For the Prime Minister, these measures are an essential lever to strengthen the operational effectiveness of the security forces and improve their motivation on the ground.
The head of government also expressed his reassurance regarding the technical capabilities of the National Police, after attending several demonstrations focusing on forensic science and electronic surveillance systems. In light of evolving security threats, he emphasized the need to continue the structural reforms already underway to adapt the institution to new, increasingly complex and transnational forms of crime.
Ousmane Sonko suggests that the modernization of the National Police is not a luxury, but an essential operational requirement to guarantee the effectiveness of public action in security matters and to meet contemporary security challenges.
