[ Contribution ] The “Seguragate” or The Story of A Rather Unusual Cola Nut

On September 25th, just a few hours before leaving Senegal after a 3-year mission as IMF Resident Representative in Senegal, Alex Segura was invited to a farewell dinner by the President of his host country. Little did he know that the quality time he was going to enjoy with President Abdoulaye Wade was going to have sour and perhaps lasting repercussions on him and the institution he is working for. The two suitcases with “substantial amount of money” he was given at the end of his “high-profile hang out” are at the centre of a huge controversy between Senegal and the IMF.

  • Desertification Taking Toll on Africa's Sahel
Desertification Taking Toll on Africa's Sahel

In West Africa's Sahel region, which has had poor rain over the past few decades, scientists and human rights activists are hard at work trying to combat some of the many negative effects of desertification - the process by which fertile land turns into desert. Jean-Marc Duplantier has a map showing how new types of desert rodents have traveled southward over the past 15 years from Mauritania to Dakar, Senegal's seaside capital. The gerbil-like rodents ravage crops, including one of Senegal's only cash earners, peanuts. They also transmit diseases to humans through ticks. He says it is all a result of desertification.

  • Senegalese Teenager Wins Right to Study in the U.S
Senegalese Teenager Wins Right to Study in the U.S

It was the unexpected success of his East Harlem high school robotics team in April that forced Amadou Ly, 18, to reveal his secret: He was an illegal immigrant from Senegal, left at 14 to fend for himself in hopes of completing an American education, but caught instead in what seemed like a losing battle against deportation. But when the secret became front-page news in The New York Times, scores of strangers rallied to his side. To pressure the Department of Homeland Security on his behalf, volunteer lawyers built a team that included 6 senators, 23 members of the House of Representatives, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the Senegalese ambassador. Word spread that even the man in the Oval Office had weighed in.

  • COMMENTARY : Taking Charge
    COMMENTARY : Taking Charge

The current political climate in our nation, makes it ripe for change. We, the people want change, we want it desperately, but we are still not sure what kind of change it is we want or even how to attain that change. Historically, when the people of a nation demand change it is because they have come to a common consensus that their best interests have not been the primary consideration of the government, therefore, it is time to take matters into their own hands. In the Feudal System during the Middle Ages, the rich and royalty lived pampered lives on the backs of the common man - who had no hope of acquiring wealth or status. No opportunity for betterment was afforded to the vassal such as education or property ownership.

  • Senegal migrant song hits the net
Senegal migrant song hits the net

A hard-hitting song accusing Senegal's government of forcing young people to risk their lives to seek their fortunes abroad has been an internet success - ahead of its official release planned later this week.  The rap song Sunugaal, which means Our Canoe in the Wolof language, has been set to a slideshow of photographs showing the faces of miserable migrants arriving in rickety wooden boats in the Canary Islands, after a perilous 100km (60-mile) journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Student's Prize Is a Trip Into Immigration Limbo
Student's Prize Is a Trip Into Immigration Limbo

A small, troubled high school in East Harlem seemed an unlikely place to find students for a nationwide robot-building contest, but when a neighborhood after-school program started a team last winter, 19 students signed up. One was Amadou Ly, a senior who had been fending for himself since he was 14. The project had only one computer and no real work space. Engineering advice came from an elevator mechanic and a machinist's son without a college degree. But in an upset that astonished its sponsors, the rookie team from East Harlem won the regional competition last month, beating rivals from elite schools like Stuyvesant in Manhattan and the Bronx High School of Science for a chance to compete in the national robotics finals in Atlanta that begins tomorrow.

  • Coup Plotters Speak Out: Tamsir Jasseh
Coup Plotters Speak Out: Tamsir Jasseh

My name is Tamsir Jasseh. I have served as Police Adviser and Deputy Inspector General of Police as well as Director General of Immigration. The knowledge that I have of this incident is rather limited and I was able to get this information at the very last minute.Personally, when I looked at the situation, it looked more like there was a plan that was never executed. I was informed about this whole thing by Col. Ndure Cham, whom I’ve known through the services, because I was serving, that he had more like a desire than a plan to overthrow - to change the government.
