Mining sovereignty: Senegal to refine its gold

The Sovereign Fund for Strategic Investments (FONSIS) and the Senegal Mining Company (SOMISEN SA) have entered into a historic partnership to create a national gold processing plant and gold refining facility dedicated to artisanal and semi-mechanized production. Announced on March 20, this agreement marks a decisive step forward in the local transformation of mineral resources, a pillar of Senegal's economic sovereignty.

This project aims to mobilize national and international capital to structure a more competitive mining sector. Babacar Gning, Director General of FONSIS, sees this as a crucial step: "Transforming our resources locally is a strategic issue. This partnership will give rise to the first gold refining company with Senegalese capital."

Ngagne Demba Touré, Director General of SOMISEN, adds: "This agreement is part of the 'Competitive Economy' pillar of Vision Senegal 2050. It positions the mining sector as an engine of sustainable growth." The objective: to capture added value at the national level rather than exporting raw materials.

FONSIS, the government's strategic investment arm, relies on co-financing with the private sector to boost high-impact projects. For its part, SOMISEN, the public mining portfolio manager, ensures the exploitation and marketing of resources allocated to the government. Together, they aim to create national champions and innovative financing models.

By investing in a refining plant, Senegal aims to better exploit gold from artisanal mines, which are often poorly regulated, while reducing economic losses associated with raw exports. This project is part of an inclusive development approach, aimed at generating jobs and strengthening local capacity.

With this initiative, the country is taking a step towards greater control of its mineral resources, aligned with long-term economic transformation objectives.
