His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, sent a royal message to the nation on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, announcing the decision not to perform the Eid Al-Adha sacrifice ritual this year. This announcement was read by the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, during the Al Aoula TV news.

This choice is part of an approach of responsibility and solidarity in the face of a difficult economic and climatic situation which is afflicting the kingdom.

Eid Al-Adha, a pillar of spirituality and sharing, usually sees Moroccan families practice the sacrifice of sheep, a sunnah mu'akkadah, that is to say a tradition that is strongly recommended but not obligatory. This year, however, the sovereign highlighted the challenges his people face: a notable decline in livestock due to harsh climatic conditions, exacerbated by a tense economic situation.

The king not only called for a break from tradition; he also announced that he will sacrifice a sheep on his behalf and on behalf of all Moroccans, thus honoring the tradition of the Prophet Mohammed while emphasizing the importance of preserving the spirit of this holiday. In doing so, he transforms an act of deprivation into a symbol of generosity and national unity.

This royal message is not just a response to an economic emergency; it is also a lesson in flexibility and compassion. It reminds us that the teachings of Islam are not rigid but rather adapted to the realities of the faithful. The King, as Amir Al Mouminine, shows that it is possible to remain faithful to the spirit of traditions while adapting their expressions to the needs of the moment.

Moroccans are thus invited to celebrate Eid Al-Adha by focusing on its most spiritual and communal aspects: prayer, strengthening family ties, and acts of charity. These actions, which are at the heart of the celebration, should be seen not as a lesser substitute, but as a fully valid expression of faith.

King Mohammed VI’s decision is a powerful reminder that the true essence of Eid Al-Adha lies in the ability to think of others before oneself and to preserve unity and goodwill within the community. It is an illustration of how leaders can guide with wisdom and make bold decisions for the well-being of their people, while remaining rooted in the values of their culture and religion. In these uncertain times, this thoughtful and inclusive approach is more necessary than ever.
