The Council of Press Broadcasters and Publishers of Senegal (CDEPS) strongly condemns the insults and defamatory remarks that have been increasing in the public sphere for several years, regretting the prolonged inaction of the National Audiovisual Regulatory Council (CNRA) in the face of these excesses. According to the organization, "the recent reminder to the media by the president of the CNRA is akin to an insidious attempt to muzzle the press and interfere in the internal functioning of editorial offices."

The CDEPS also condemns "the repeated attacks on press freedom since the arrival of the current regime," citing in particular tax investigations, the suppression of advertisements, non-payment for services provided, illegal cutting of signals from certain television channels and attempts to regulate the practice of journalism.

The organization urges the CNRA to comply with current regulations by appointing the eight new members of its college, a delay that, it believes, compromises its effectiveness and credibility. The CDEPS reaffirms its demand for the CNRA's complete independence and warns against any submission to partisan pressure.

Committed to press freedom, a fundamental pillar of democracy, the CDEPS calls on the authorities to act immediately to guarantee the safety of journalists and the media, restore the independence of the CNRA and put an end to all forms of intimidation or pressure against the press.
