Équipe nationale du Sénégal : Pape Matar Sarr, l’homme des grands rendez-vous ?
Senegal have their new metronome in their sights now more than ever. By scoring the Lions' third goal against DR Congo (3-2), which sealed victory and top spot in the group, Pape Matar Sarr confirmed his status as a key player in these qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
This goal scored at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa is not an isolated incident, but the continuation of a series of high-level performances. The former Generation Foot player, now at Tottenham in England, has distinguished himself several times during this World Cup qualifying campaign. Already on Matchday 5 in Nouakchott, he provided an assist to Habib Diallo with a pinpoint cross, thus giving the Lions a precious victory against Mauritania (1-0). On March 25, against Togo (2-0) at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio, he opened the scoring in the 35th minute, launching Senegal to a controlled victory.
Often singled out for a lack of offensive impact despite his undeniable technical qualities, the former FC Metz midfielder
silenced the critics. On September 5, against Sudan (2-0), he had already scored a splendid goal, confirming his rise to power. And against DR Congo, a substitute at kick-off despite his previous strong performance, he once again proved his effectiveness by scoring the saving goal on an assist from Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly.
At just 23 years old, Pape Matar Sarr has established himself as one of the key players in Pape Bouna Thiaw's squad. Considered from the start as the future leader of the Senegalese midfield, he has now assumed this role with consistency and maturity. More than just a budding talent, he is now one of the pillars of the national team, capable of making the difference in decisive moments.
