Mondial-2026: le Cap-Vert dompte le Cameroun et fait un grand pas vers une qualification historique
Cape Verde took a big step towards their first participation in a World Cup by beating Cameroon (1-0) on Tuesday in Praia, during the African zone qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
This victory allows the Cape Verdeans to take a five-point lead over the Indomitable Lions at the top of Group D, with two matches remaining.
Following Morocco's qualification on Friday and Tunisia's on Monday, the final six direct World Cup tickets to the United States, Canada and Mexico will be decided in October during the final two rounds of matches.
Egypt and South Africa had the chance to confirm their qualification on Tuesday, but the Pharaohs were unable to separate themselves from their direct rivals Burkina Faso (0-0), while Bafana Bafana were held to a draw by Nigeria (1-1).
South Africa remains firmly in first place and is six points ahead of Nigeria, Benin, who play Lesotho on Tuesday evening, and Rwanda.
For their part, Mohamed Salah's teammates are five points ahead of Burkina Faso and a draw should be enough for them to reach their fourth World Cup finals after 1934, 1990 and 2018.
Having started off badly in a match where they were trailing 2-0 in the 40th minute, Senegal cleared the road to the World Cup by overturning the DR Congo (2-3), thanks to a late goal from former FC Metz player, Pape Matar Sarr.
This success in the warm atmosphere of the Martyrs stadium in Kinshasa puts the Lions of Teranga at the top of their group, two points ahead of the DRC and six ahead of Sudan, beaten by Togo (1-0).
In Tuesday's other matches, Sierra Leone beat Ethiopia 2-0, doing what was necessary to keep alive their chances of snatching second place in their group.
Niger won in Tanzania (1-0) and Rwanda in Zimbabwe (1-0).
Kenya enjoyed a 5-0 victory over Seychelles, while a hat-trick from Peter Shalulile lifted Namibia to a 3-0 victory over São Tomé and Príncipe.
Tuesday evening saw Gambia-Burundi, Mauritania-South Sudan, Benin-Lesotho and, above all, Gabon-Ivory Coast, the top of Group F, with the Ivorian leaders only one point ahead of their evening opponents.
The winners of the eight African groups qualify directly for the World Cup. The four best runners-up will compete in a play-off tournament, which will qualify for FIFA's intercontinental tournament.
