Côte d'Ivoire: le camp Ouattara accuse l'opposition d'être "dans la logique du pire"
Ivory Coast's ruling party accused the opposition on Wednesday of "maintaining a climate of tension" and "taking the worst-case scenario" after former President Laurent Gbagbo called for opposition to a fourth term for President Alassane Ouattara.
Two months before the presidential election on October 25, the political climate is tense in Côte d'Ivoire, particularly because of the exclusion from the election by court decisions of several opposition leaders, including Mr. Gbagbo.
"We must be clear and unequivocal: there will be no fourth term. Our determination is unwavering," the former president declared Saturday during a rally in Abidjan.
A week earlier, the two main opposition parties, Mr. Gbagbo's African People's Party - Côte d'Ivoire (PPA-CI) and Tidjane Thiam's Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI), had mobilized thousands of demonstrators who marched peacefully against a fourth term for President Ouattara.
"The demonstrations organized by the opposition have no other goal than to maintain a climate of tension and thus prepare its activists to take action when the time comes. They have chosen to adopt the worst-case scenario, that is, to sow disorder," Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani, spokesperson for the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), declared on Wednesday.
"All those involved in preparing this disastrous destabilization project must understand that the state will not fail," he added.
Calling for "calm and serenity," he assured that the presidential election would indeed be held on October 25 as planned.
At the end of July, Alassane Ouattara, head of Côte d'Ivoire, declared that he was a candidate for a fourth term, assuring that the Constitution allowed him to do so.
The current Ivorian fundamental law provides for a maximum of two terms, but the Constitutional Council ruled in 2020 that the adoption of this new Constitution four years earlier had reset the presidential term counter to zero. This is something the opposition has always contested.
In addition to Laurent Gbagbo, his former right-hand man Charles Blé Goudé and exiled former Prime Minister Guillaume Soro are also removed from the electoral rolls due to judicial convictions. Tidjane Thiam, the president of the PDCI, is also ineligible for election due to nationality issues.
Several members of the PPA-CI were charged with "terrorist acts" last week, following incidents in early August in Yopougon, a commune of Abidjan.
