In Guinea, the town of Manéah (commune of Coyah) was the scene of a tragedy yesterday evening, Wednesday, August 20. Large blocks of sand detached themselves from the side of the mountain at the foot of which several houses were located. These ten or so homes were swept away, and their occupants were buried. Yesterday, there were nine deaths and many injured.

Bah Oury denounces anarchic construction in risk areas

Emergency services dispatched to the scene are working tirelessly to find survivors. According to a provisional report released by the government this Thursday morning, there are now 15 dead and around ten injured. The latter have been transferred to Coyah hospital for treatment.

The State expressed its deep compassion and solidarity with the families of the victims. Visiting the scene of the tragedy this Thursday morning, Prime Minister Bah Oury denounced the uncontrolled construction in high-risk areas, particularly at the foot of mountains and old riverbeds.

"Building where water flows, building below mountainside, is a matter of responsibility for oneself and one's family. The public authorities will now take all measures to determine buildable areas throughout the country," he issued as a warning.
