A high-level political mission deployed by ECOWAS and the UN in Guinea-Bissau from 21 to 28 February 2025 left the country in a hurry, following tensions with President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
Mandated by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, this mission aimed to support political actors in developing a roadmap for inclusive and peaceful elections in 2025. It met with President Embaló as well as various political leaders, electoral authorities, civil society and international partners.
Despite an engaged dialogue and the presentation of a draft agreement, the mission had to leave Bissau, after the head of state issued threats of expulsion. It will submit its report to the president of the ECOWAS Commission, with recommendations for reaching an electoral consensus.
Before its departure, the mission called on citizens and stakeholders to preserve peace and stability in the country.
