The Sudanese army was on Thursday 500 meters from the presidential palace in central Khartoum, where fighting is raging, a military source told AFP.
The building has been in the hands of its adversaries, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), since the outbreak of war in April 2023.
This source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, specified that as part of its offensive, the army "destroyed a convoy of 30 FSR vehicles which was trying to withdraw towards the south" of the capital, where one of its strongholds is located.
On Monday, the army converged its forces from the south with those already present in the city center, increasing the pressure on the FSR.
For nearly two years, the war has pitted the army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, against his former deputy and commander of the FSR, Mohamed Hamdane Daglo.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, uprooted more than 12 million people and triggered the world's largest food and displacement crisis.
According to the United Nations, in Khartoum alone, at least 3.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to the violence, while at least 100,000 people are facing famine.
