Sonko
At a press conference held in Conakry on June 2, 2025, alongside his Guinean counterpart Amadou Oury Bah, Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko strongly denounced xenophobic rhetoric targeting certain foreign communities in Africa, describing these "unacceptable ideologies" as sometimes fueled by political leaders.
Speaking after a working session at the Palais de la Colombe, which focused on bilateral cooperation between Senegal and Guinea, Sonko reaffirmed his opposition to intolerance. "Guineans in Senegal are at home, just as Senegalese people in Guinea are treated with respect," he said, in the presence of several ministers from both governments.
He criticized the hate speech propagated on social media, often supported by politicians. "These speeches do not educate our youth. We must raise awareness among our populations: beyond imposed borders, we form a single people with linked destinies," he argued. According to him, the internal problems of African countries do not stem from the presence of foreigners, but from "endemic corruption, mismanagement of natural resources, and the lack of vision to industrialize our economies and create jobs."
Sonko lamented that some leaders were scapegoating others instead of addressing these structural challenges. After his discussions with Amadou Oury Bah and an audience with Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya, he continued his regional tour, arriving in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on the evening of June 2. This six-day visit, which began in Côte d'Ivoire, will conclude on June 3 after discussions in Sierra Leone.
