In Sudan, General Hemedti, head of the FSR paramilitary, intends to create a parallel government to that of Port Sudan to administer the regions under the control of his Rapid Support Forces. Yesterday, Tuesday, February 18, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, the Sudan Founding Alliance was launched. This initiative brings together actors from civil society, political parties and armed groups, willing to support the formation of a new Sudanese government.
There were hundreds of them in the Kenyatta International Conference Center. Ahmed Abuzeid Ahmed, represents the Umma party, one of the oldest political parties in the country , today divided: " I am eager to see this new government because there are more and more war crimes, especially in Darfur: Nyala, El-Fasher , Kabkabiya, in these cities, military planes hit civilians , not rebels. For this reason, we need this government to defend us. "
In early January, the United States, like several NGOs, accused General Hemedti’s RSF of committing genocide in Darfur. Muhamad Ahmad Hassan is the president of the civilian government of South Darfur: “ I come from Nyala. I do not support Hemedti or the RSF, but I represent the civilian government and I know the needs of the people of South Darfur. We need peace. I see the bombings every day. This new government must stop them. ”
In early January, the Taqaddum civil society coalition exploded. The Justice and Equality Movement was part of it. For Ahmed Tugod, its secretary general, it is time to change strategy: “ In the absence of an authority capable of uniting the country, we must create a de facto situation. We do not claim to create a legitimate authority on the ground. We do not deny that there have been many abuses. But we want to create a new reality to approach the international community. ”
Civil society organisations, political parties, armed groups and the FSR are due to sign a charter in Kenya on Friday 21 February to lay the foundations for a new government.
