A tragic incident. An explosion occurred this Monday at a Pennsylvania coal plant, resulting in one death, two missing persons, and several injuries, US authorities announced.

The incident occurred at the Clairton Coke Works plant, owned by the American steel company US Steel, about 25 km from Pittsburgh.

"At this point, officials can confirm that there has been one death related to this incident," Allegheny County police spokesman James Madalinsky told AFP.

TWO PEOPLE MISSING

"Two people are currently considered missing, and several individuals have been treated for additional injuries. The whereabouts of these individuals are unknown at this time," he continued.

For his part, US Steel's press relations manager, Andrew Fulton, added that "emergency teams were immediately mobilized to the scene" after the explosion occurred around 11 a.m.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the incident and will provide further updates as they become available," said David Burritt, the group's chief executive.
