Ardo
Activist Ardo Gningue appeared before the Dakar flagrante delicto court this Wednesday for the offenses of speech contrary to public decency and writing contrary to public decency. Ardo Gningue identified himself as a rancher. He had posted on his Facebook page that the public prosecutor cannot prosecute based on the word "thiappa." Otherwise, a judicial investigation should be opened against columnist Pape Assane Seck, who goes by the name "Sarap li."
Ardo Gningue took responsibility for his posts. He stated that he had no intention of insulting. And the word "thiappa" depends on the meaning of the word. He explained himself, saying that Pastef Party activists had threatened him, promising that he would not pass the Korité vote. Thus, the threats went viral on social media. That's why he made this statement.
The public prosecutor reprimanded him, reminding him that the word "Thiappa" he used has a precise definition in Wolof. According to the prosecution, the columnist should not have made such a statement, which is contrary to our morality. The public prosecutor requested a six-month sentence, including three months in prison.
The defendant was defended by Tafsir Abdoul Sy, Alioune Badara Fall, Amadou Sall, and Oumar Youm. The lawyers primarily argued for an outright acquittal. According to Fall, the prosecutor made a harsh indictment. The black robe lacked a moral element. Alternatively, the defense requested leniency. Ardon's fate will be determined on March 26.
