General drop in water level in the Gambia River basin

Kédougou, September 3, 2025 – The latest hydrological bulletin reveals a general downward trend in water levels in the Gambia River basin and its tributaries. Measurements taken this Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. confirm a significant decline compared to the previous day, even if water levels remain higher than those recorded at the same time last year.

Tributaries under surveillance

At the Diaguiri station (upstream of Mako), the level fell to 3.32 m, a decrease of 61 cm compared to September 2. Last year, at the same date, it was only 1.97 m, confirming a significant improvement in the resource in 2025.

At Afia Pont (Thiokoye), the water level is 1.79 m, a slight decrease of 4 cm. The level remains comparable to that of 2024 (1.74 m).

The Niokolo Koba station recorded 5.73 m, compared to 5.79 m the day before, a decrease of 6 cm, but significantly higher than the 4.41 m of 2024.

In Diahra Pont, the situation is stable with 1.30 m, unchanged since yesterday.

The Goumbayel station, for its part, recorded a slight increase: 2.07 m compared to 2.05 m yesterday. This level remains well above last year's level (1.63 m).

Finally, in Sinthiou Malème, the water levels are now too low to be raised.

The Gambia River is falling

In Kédougou, the river is measured at 3.94 m, a sharp drop of 67 cm compared to September 2. This level nevertheless remains higher than that of 2024 (3.03 m). As a reminder, the alert level in Kédougou is set at 7 m.

In Simenti, the water level reached 7.22 m, compared to 7.70 m the day before, a decrease of 48 cm. Here again, the comparison with last year (4.95 m) remains favorable. The alert level there is 13 m.

Finally, in Mako, the level is measured at 3.93 m, a drop of 22 cm over 24 hours, but well above that of 2024 (3.07 m). The alert level there is 6 m.

A trend to follow

Overall, the data from September 3, 2025, confirm a general downward trend that began a few days ago, despite levels that are generally higher than those of the same period last year. Hydrological services are calling for vigilance, particularly for agricultural areas and localities dependent on the river, while reminding that the alert levels are still a long way off.
