Bulletin hydrologique du 29 août 2025 : le fleuve Gambie en hausse à Kédougou et Mako, légère baisse à Gouloumbou

The Directorate of Flood Management and Prevention published its daily hydrological bulletin on Friday, August 29, 2025, regarding the water levels of the Gambia River and its tributaries. The data show a mixed trend across stations, with significant increases and decreases.

Tributaries in contrasting variations

In Diaguiri, the water level rose sharply, reaching 6.00 m this morning compared to 4.66 m the day before, a spectacular increase of 1.34 m in 24 hours. Last year at the same time, the level did not exceed 2.05 m.

On the other hand, in Afia Pont (Thiokoye), the trend is reversed with a significant drop: 2.78 m against 4.05 m on August 28, a decline of 1.27 m.

The Niokolo Koba station also recorded a drop, with 5.88 m this morning compared to 6.80 m yesterday.

In Diahra Pont and Goumbayel, the rise remains modest (+24 cm and +6 cm respectively). In Sinthiou Malème, the water level remains below the measuring scale.

The Gambia River is rising in Kédougou, Simenti and Mako

In its main course, the Gambia River is experiencing significant increases:

• Kédougou: 5.55 m this morning compared to 4.93 m yesterday, an increase of 62 cm. The alert level is set at 7 m.

• Mako: 4.55 m, an increase of 50 cm compared to the previous day. The alert level is 6 m.

• Simenti: 6.76 m, up 46 cm in 24 hours. Here, the alert level is set at 13 m, a threshold still far away.

Slight drop in Gouloumbou

At Gouloumbou, the river has receded slightly, dropping from 7.31 m on August 27 to 7.05 m this morning, a decrease of 26 cm. Despite this decline, the level remains higher than last year's (6.88 m), but remains well below the alert level set at 12 m.

Careful monitoring in the middle of the rainy season

These variations reflect the strong influence of winter rains on the Gambia River basin. Authorities point out that some stations, such as Kédougou and Mako, are gradually approaching their critical thresholds, requiring increased vigilance from local populations.
