Hydrological monitoring of the Gambia River basin, carried out by the Directorate of Water Resources Management and Planning (DGPRE), revealed marked variations between stations on August 20, 2025. While some areas recorded an impressive rise in water levels, others experienced a notable decline, reflecting the hydrological instability of the rainy season.

In Diaguiri, the water level is 4.21 m, a drop of 11 cm compared to the previous day. The same trend is observed in Sinthiou Malème, where the level has fallen to 0.90 m, compared to 1.15 m the previous day.

In contrast, Niokolo Koba recorded a spectacular rise: 6.40 m this morning, or +42 cm in just 24 hours. A figure well above the 2.07 m measured at the same time last year.

The Gambia River fluctuates between rising and falling

  1. Kédougou: down with 4.88 m (-25 cm).
  2. Mako: progressing to 4.34 m (+24 cm).
  3. Simenti: sudden fall to 8.00 m (-60 cm).
  4. Gouloumbou: up to 7.39 m (+38 cm).

Although the alert levels—set at 7 m in Kédougou, 6 m in Mako, 13 m in Simenti, and 12 m in Gouloumbou—have not yet been reached, the DGPRE is calling for caution. During the rainy season, flash floods can quickly take local residents by surprise.

These daily readings, carried out by the Tambacounda Water Resources Brigade, remain a crucial tool for anticipating floods and strengthening the resilience of communities in the face of climatic hazards.
