"We are experiencing extreme precariousness, even though we supported the break-up plan put forward by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Today, our difficulties persist, and we depend on imported fish from Mauritania or Morocco. The Senegalese sea is depleting, and this threatens our survival." The warning came from the vice-president of the Thiès Fishmongers Association, Moussa Yékéni Diop.

A warning was issued to the mayor of Thiès, Dr. Babacar Diop, who, under a threatening sky, went to the central fish market at 6 a.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the invitation of the fishmongers. Welcomed by the fishmongers, the mayor waded through the sewage flooding the premises to discover, up close, the "working conditions deemed unsanitary and dangerous."

"This is the first time that an authority has come to see our realities firsthand. We work in total insecurity, without lighting, exposed to attacks. Recently, one of our own was fatally attacked," lamented the president of the women fishmongers, Mame Maréma Mbaye. She then welcomed this unprecedented gesture.

But it is also a strong reminder of the urgency of opening the new fish market built in Diassap, on the road to Tivaouane, but still closed, despite the billions invested by the State.

The mayor of Thiès, explaining the reasons for his morning visit, said he observed three realities. First, "fishing is a strategic sector for our economy." Second, "it employs a large number of young people and women, starting at 5 a.m." Finally, "Senegal now imports fish, which highlights the scarcity of fish on our coasts and the need to protect our marine resources."

Dr. Babacar Diop stressed the need for better organization of the sector, increased security, and support for fishmongers. "The state has invested billions in a modern market that remains closed. This site must be opened and managed effectively, because poor management could plunge the infrastructure back into the pitfalls of the old markets," he warned.

In the meantime, the fishmongers of Thiès continue to work in precarious conditions, between unsanitary conditions, insecurity and scarcity of fish, while remaining hopeful that the new Diassap market will finally open.
