Ce pays se qualifie pour le Mondial-2026 et le président déclare le vendredi jour férié
Football has always been more than a game. It unleashes torrents of joy, especially after a victory or qualification for a major tournament. In Paraguay, President Santiago Pena Nieto was so delighted with his country's qualification for the next World Cup that he declared Friday a public holiday.
“The Albirroja is back”
“Sixteen years have passed since our last qualification… Sixteen years without hearing our anthem at a World Cup. Thank you Albirroja! Today, the Albirroja is back. She has returned with her soul, her heart and all the Guarani courage… It is a dream come true for all Paraguayans and that is why tomorrow (this Friday) is a holiday so that all Paraguayans can celebrate together! We are back at the World Cup and we are all celebrating,” the leader wrote on his X account.
Qualification secured after a draw against Ecuador
The Albirroja snatched their ticket to the North American World Cup after drawing 0-0 against Ecuador early this morning, on the penultimate day of the South American qualifiers.
