Éliminatoires Mondial-2026 : Comment fonctionnent les barrages
The vast majority of national teams will qualify for the 2026 World Cup before the end of this year, with the group draw scheduled for December in the United States. Six teams will take part in the play-offs, which will provide the final two spots for the competition.
One African team will be included in these play-offs. It will be determined by the African pre-play-offs, scheduled for November, which will see the four best second-place teams from the groups compete in two semi-finals and a final.
In addition to one African team, two from North America, one from Asia, one from South America, and one from Oceania will take part in the play-offs. They will be played during the FIFA window in March 2026. The matches will be scheduled between March 23 and 31.
The six participating nations will be ranked according to the FIFA rankings. The two highest-ranked teams will advance directly to the play-off final, while the other four will meet in the semi-finals after a draw. The semi-final winners will then face the two highest-ranked teams in a decisive final. The winners of these two matches will secure their ticket to the 2026 World Cup and join the 46 teams that have already qualified.
These play-off matches will take place in the World Cup host countries, namely the United States, Canada and Mexico.
