The city of Dakar is hosting the Preparatory Meeting for the United Nations Water Conference from January 26th to 27th. This major event, co-organized with the United Arab Emirates, has registered nearly 3,000 expressions of interest. Discussions will focus on several themes, including "water for the people," "water for prosperity," and "water for the planet." "The United Nations Water Conference will be held in the United Arab Emirates. However, we decided to hold a preparatory meeting in Dakar to lay the groundwork for the Abu Dhabi Conference," explained the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, in an interview with the 8 PM news on RTS, presented by Anne Marie Gomis, on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

This High-Level Meeting in Dakar, part of the preparations for the United Nations Water Conference in Abu Dhabi scheduled for early December, is taking place against a backdrop of challenges. Without massive investments and a paradigm shift, many countries will not meet the 2030 targets. "The outlook is not reassuring. After the launch of the SDGs in 2015 and the 2025 review, we realize that if the trend continues, without major transformations and massive investments, we will reach 2030 without having achieved the Sustainable Development Goals," warned the minister, who also stated: "Water availability is not a sign of water accessibility."

According to a statement from the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, the Dakar Meeting is an important step in the process of developing the roadmap leading to the United Arab Emirates. “As a major event in the preparation for the Conference, the Dakar High-Level Meeting will lay the groundwork for the 2026 UN Water Conference. The overall objectives of the meeting are to contribute to the effectiveness of the Conference preparations, to review the progress and delays recorded in achieving SDG 6, and to explore ideas to accelerate the achievement of internationally agreed water-related goals and targets,” the statement reads.

The countries organizing this preparatory meeting, which will be chaired by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Faye, expect participation from all stakeholders in the process of seeking answers to the challenges of access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation services.
