Arabie saoudite : or, cuivre, lithium...
Saudi Arabia's subsoil is teeming with mineral resources, estimated to be worth several trillion dollars.
A veritable mining El Dorado. As the energy transition becomes a central issue for the global economy, the race for minerals is accelerating. Rare earth elements and critical minerals are now essential for new cutting-edge technologies, whether related to automobiles, artificial intelligence, or military equipment.
Faced with its growing dependence on these strategic resources, Saudi Arabia intends to develop its mining sector and thus establish itself in this market. It must be said that the Middle Eastern country is rich in mineral wealth, such as gold, zinc, copper, and lithium. The territory also contains deposits of rare earth elements, such as dysprosium, terbium, neodymium, and praseodymium.
Forty-eight types of minerals have been identified and cataloged in Saudi Arabia's subsoil. In total, the kingdom's mineral wealth is estimated at $2.5 trillion, as reported by CNN.
Attracting foreign investment
For several years now, Saudi Arabia has been investing heavily in its ambitions to develop its mining sector and attract foreign investment. Between 2021 and 2025, the budget allocated to mineral exploration increased by 595%, rising from $21 million to $146 million, according to data from S&P Global.
In addition to this substantial budget increase, Riyadh is implementing a policy of reducing tax rates on mining investments. Similarly, the country is working to streamline administrative procedures and expedite the granting of licenses to both domestic and international companies.
Despite these numerous measures, Saudi Arabia remains far behind some advanced mining countries such as Canada, Australia, and China. The country led by Xi Jinping dominates this sector, controlling more than 90% of the world's refined rare earth production.
