Après la rupture, la paralysie ? Le face-à-face électrique qui attend le Palais et l'Assemblée
The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. Consequently, the entire government has been dissolved.
This decision was made in a specific context, marked by direct consultations with key stakeholders in the nation, including former Prime Ministers and Ministers of the Interior from various previous regimes. It also comes just hours after the now former head of government appeared before the National Assembly.
"I am not a Prime Minister who blindly follows the President of the Republic. When I disagree, I express it," said Ousmane Sonko, announcing the tensions that led to this separation.
He also raised the issue of special funds, stating that he was not in agreement with the tenant of the palace, among other remarks made in front of the deputies of his party.
Indeed, the National Assembly is dominated by the Pastef party, with 130 deputies out of 165, since the early legislative elections of November 17, 2024.
This configuration complicates the institutional balance, insofar as the head of state cannot, as things stand, dissolve the National Assembly, whose mandate expires next December.
This context therefore suggests a latent political tension between the Pastef deputies and their historical leader, now President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. This is all the more true given that the latter has announced a number of reforms that will have to be submitted to parliament for approval.
What stance will he take towards this parliamentary majority loyal to his former Prime Minister? Will he have the means to bypass the National Assembly? The coming days will tell.
