Déforestation et zones marines : Les députés alertent sur l’urgence d’agir sur le terrain

The Ministry of the Environment's 2026 draft budget allocates 25.6 billion CFA francs to combating deforestation and land degradation, and 8.67 billion CFA francs to biodiversity conservation and protected areas, including marine zones. During the budget review in the National Assembly committee, several parliamentarians expressed their concerns about the persistence of environmental threats, despite the allocated resources.

These are the "abusive logging and charcoal trafficking that continue to weaken the forests in the Ferlo, Casamance and the groundnut basin. The degradation of marine and coastal areas, with increasing pressure from human activities on mangroves, reefs and marine parks. The urgent need to increase field staff, improve monitoring and strengthen tracking technologies to protect biodiversity. The importance of supporting local communities in reforestation efforts, marine protection and sustainable management of natural resources," all points highlighted by the members of parliament as proposals to the minister.

The MPs stressed that simply allocating budgetary funds is not enough: it is necessary to guarantee the effective execution of investments and the implementation of concrete policies to safeguard terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
