Démocratie en Afrique : Tournons La Page appelle à résister aux régimes autoritaires
For three days, from September 22 to 24, 2025, Dakar hosted the General Assembly of the international movement Tournons La Page (TLP). Civil society actors from Africa and Europe gathered to debate the challenges of democracy, denounce authoritarian excesses, and define new directions for inclusive governance that respects human rights.
According to Eliass Beanzin, president of TLP, this meeting marks a turning point: "This general assembly has made it possible to elect a new board of directors and establish a seven-member executive. They will be responsible for carrying the movement's voice, defending its values, and ensuring the implementation of the collectively defined guidelines."
Faced with the proliferation of authoritarian regimes and arbitrary arrests that are weakening civic space, Beanzin insists on the need for constant citizen vigilance: "Our future cannot be confiscated by authoritarian regimes or tailor-made constitutions. Democracy is not negotiable; it is defended, protected, and lived every day."
The movement took the opportunity to express its unwavering solidarity with its unjustly detained members, including Prince Fadel and Affectio in Togo, as well as Oumar Sylla and Mamadou Billo Bah in Guinea. "Their courageous commitment to freedom, justice, and political change remains a source of inspiration for the entire movement," said the TLP president.
At the end of the meeting, TLP members adopted a 2026–2028 action plan structured around three priorities. It combines citizen mobilization that will amplify grassroots initiatives, strengthen citizen organization and capacity for action, and combat the seizure of power. It also includes a school of democracy that aims to create a training and transfer space for activists, organizations, and social movements to strengthen the capacities of civil society. Finally, it aims to promote protection and governance to defend threatened civic spaces, protect those committed to democracy, and promote inclusive, transparent governance that respects human rights.
By reaffirming its commitment, Tournons La Page intends to continue the fight for an Africa where democracy takes root and is protected on a daily basis, despite the threats and setbacks observed in several countries on the continent.
