L’APR salue la mobilisation du 31 octobre et appelle à poursuivre la lutte pour la démocratie

The Alliance for the Republic (APR) welcomed the strong popular mobilization recorded during the march organized by the Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) on October 31 in Dakar. In a statement sent to Seneweb, the National Executive Secretariat (SEN) described this demonstration as "a major step in the Senegalese people's struggle for democracy, social justice, and the defense of the Republic."

The march of October 31st was an expression of profound frustration with the high cost of living, arbitrary rule, and democratic backsliding. "From all over, the people of Dakar spontaneously and massively took to the streets to say no to arbitrary rule, no to state arrogance, no to the high cost of living that plunges people into unbearable suffering, no to the stifling of democratic freedoms, no to unacceptable imprisonments!"

Yes, the people of Dakar turned out in massive numbers and with determination to express their anger and voice their opinions against this style of governance, which is dangerously oscillating between populism, democratic backsliding, economic and social breakdown, and the erosion of the Republic and the rule of law. Rarely in recent years has Senegal witnessed such a peaceful and democratic citizen uprising against a government that has barely been installed,” the statement reads.

The party also addressed the demands expressed by the protesters: protection of purchasing power, support for rural areas, and respect for institutions, the rule of law, and civil liberties. "In short, the people of Dakar, like an overwhelming majority of Senegalese, want the government to address their daily needs as they have experienced them in the recent past, and even better. They are struggling with layoffs and the suspension of family allowances. They want a clear direction and prospects that reassure them about their own future and that of their children, not a backroom deal between rival factions at the top of the state. They want to live happily and peacefully, with equal dignity, in a Republic for all, a state governed by the rule of law that guarantees the rights of all, and a democracy for all," the statement said.

The APR's National Executive Committee also congratulated its activists, leaders, women and young people from the departments of Dakar, Guédiawaye, Keur Massar, Pikine and Rufisque, for their "exceptional" mobilization and their "constant" commitment to the service of great national causes.

The APR also calls on its grassroots members to continue their work on the ground, to strengthen solidarity with the FDR's partners, and to remain vigilant against what it describes as the "brutal excesses of the Pastef regime." "We must save both the Republic and democracy," insists the APR, which remains convinced that "defeating this regime is a historic necessity, so that Senegal remains a model democracy, a respected state governed by the rule of law and a protector of the rights of all."
